Using Omeka for the First Time

  1. Everyone has an account already established on the digital archive site. your user name is your first initial and last name, lower case with no punctuation. If you have not already done so, you will be able to set your own password the first time you access the site.
  2. To access the administrative panel go to []
  3. Everyone is a "admin user" which means you can add collections, items, and exhibits.
  4. Go to the General Settings Tab, and select Users
  5. Locate your name on the list if you want to change your user name, display name or e-mail address or password if you want. Press "Save Changes"

General Omeka Dos and Don'ts

  1. Do not change anything that anyone else has added. If you notice an error, just e-mail the person who posted it to let them know. The only exception are tags, which you can add to any item.
  2. If you have not finished working on an item, you can add it to the archive and edit it later. Just set it to private rather than public.
  3. If you have not yet secured permissions, set your items to private.
